Includes FREE planning and background information. The Northeast States only figure in the national consciousness when something dramatic happens. Likewise the region is off the tourist map for most foreign visitors, perhaps because of its lack of a ‘Taj Mahal–style, must-see’ place. Despite this, the region has many attractions worth seeking out. The great, flat Brahmaputra valley and its wide, muddy river is a traditional Hindu heartland, and is the backdrop to several Krishna tales. Lying mostly within Assam, the valley is home to beautiful tea plantations and national parks with rhinoceroses, elephants and tigers. In contrast, the mountainous surrounding states are home to tribal peoples whose varied cultures and faces have more in common with Burma, China and Tibet than mainstream India.
