Her junior year's almost over. Amy Fredericks is ready to buckle down to a summer of selling hoagies and milk shakes at her father's Lighthouse Deli on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The hardest thing she has to face is Dr. Grover's analytical geometry class --- that and some disturbing nightmares. After all, she's seventeen years old. Juniors don't go around talking about choking blue mists and great blue eyes that seem to rise out of the fog, staring at you like blue moons rising from the sea.

There's little excitement around for Amy. She's not one of the popular set. Her friends are all outcastes like her. Sue's a tomboy. Kathy's too shy. Ken? Oh, he's just the future valedictorian and class nerd. Amy can only hope that she could be like Dee-Dee Sommers and all the class cheerleaders and beauty queens someday.

One afternoon Amy's in the middle of a humiliating episode in geometry class. She trips and falls on the floor while heading to the chalkboard. A new boy, Gary Drayton, enters the room and distracts everybody's attention. Amy and her friends have never seen anyone so handsome or mysterious. He looks “cool" in his slacks and shirt, and he wears sunglasses even inside the building! Amy and her friends spend the rest of the class period whispering about him. When the bell rings, Gary pushes out the door shoulder to shoulder with Amy. He drops his sunglasses down over his nose and says, “Hi there!"

His left eye is hideous. The blue iris is gone. He stares at her with a naked white eyeball with a gaping black pit for a pupil. Just as in her nightmare, Amy feels the swirling blue mists closing in around her, choking her.
