Afternoon on Yosemite National Park's back porch - Lake Tioga, California
Winter grudgingly left Yosemite's High Country this year with one last storm dropping a touch of snow on the highest peaks of the Sierra Nevada a few days prior to the 4th of July weekend. None of the snow would stick but sheets of ice still covered a good part Lake Tioga's crystal clear water. Lake Tioga and much of the High Country in Yosemite is still pristine but not for long. Tuolumne Meadows was full of deer taking in the fresh sprouts of the meadows but in very short tow just six feet or so behind the deer were the nature paparazzi, blocking the only road in a no parking area then jumping out at full run towards the deer before they were scared off. On the trip back home a constant stream of headlights glared for as far as the eye could see. The masses in their SUV's and RV's packed the road headed East fleeing the heat of the cities and heading in to the high country to cool off. I had headed up when I heard of the impending storm with the hope of getting the last spectacular skies offered up by High Sierra storms and as sometimes happens, it worked to perfection. Upon first arrival it looked as if it was all going to be doom and gloom as snow began to fall and the area was heavily fogged in. But as evening approached the skies began to open up and the light began to seep in to the alpine lakes that lay just outside Yosemite's eastern gate. Well worth the trip I highly recommend the high country which is not quite as busy as Yosemite Valley this time of year but that too is changing.
