It had been feared the Spain international would seek to follow his international team-mate Fernando Torres in seeking a move away from Liverpool after he suggested the club could not match his ambition.

But it is thought he has been impressed by the scale of ambition shown by Anfield's owners, Fenway Sports Group, and in an interview broadcast on the Spanish radio station Cadena COPE he gave the clearest indication yet that he is prepared to stay.

"I am happy, calm and comfortable here," he said. "[I am] looking towards the future which I reckon will bring a lot of happiness and hopefully the new project with the new American owners will be a convincing one.

"Obviously, [Rafael] Benítez brought me here but that doesn't mean that I'm unhappy with [Kenny] Dalglish, quite the opposite, I think he's the ideal man for Liverpool at this moment.

"It's my understanding, and based on what I've gathered from the people here, that we will be bringing in some important players, continuing to grow and hopefully in one or two years we will be in the place that Liverpool deserves to be, which is fighting for titles."

One of those signings may be the Blackburn defender Phil Jones. Both Dalglish and Damien Comolli, the club's Director of Football, were in attendance to assess the player during Manchester City's 1-0 win at Ewood Park on Monday night.

Comolli is believed to have been tasked with accomplishing a thorough overhaul of Liverpool's squad by FSG, with as many as 22 deals in and out expected this summer. FSG wish to see the playing staff refreshed and rejuvenated, with the vast majority of targets likely to be low on age and high in resale value. As such, Jones, rated at around £12 million and pursued by Arsenal and Manchester United, fits the bill perfectly.

The 32-year-old striker made more than 200 appearances in the Premier League during spells with the Black Cats, Leeds and Newcastle, on loan.

Bridges moved to the Newcastle Jets in 2009 and scored six goals in 15 appearances during his first season in Australia.

He became the club's first overseas-born captain at the start of the 2010-11 campaign, but has since been hampered by a knee injury.

Bridges will stay on with the A-League side as their international football and business development manager.

''After great consideration it was a difficult to decision to make,'' the former England Under-21 international said.

''However the opportunity to enter the next phase of my life is one that is too exciting not to take now whilst it is being offered.''

North Shields-born Bridges is considered one of the of the Premier League's great unfulfilled talents, as injury prevented him reaching his best.

Having made a multi-million pound move from Sunderland to Leeds in 1999, Bridges scored 19 goals for United in his first season.

However, a serious Achilles injury the following year seriously hampered his ability and he failed to score again for Leeds in four more seasons before leaving.

As well as Newcastle, he also had spells in the UK at Bolton, Carlisle, Hull and MK Dons.

Darren Fletcher makes case for Manchester United return in time for Champions League final

Darren Fletcher makes case for Manchester United return in time for Champions League final

Darren Fletcher is in contention to return to the Manchester United squad for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Arsenal after ending a two-month absence because of a stomach virus with a 45-minute reserve team outing on Thursday night.

The Scotland captain lost more than a stone in weight and spent a month away from United's Carrington training ground as a result of the draining virus. But the midfielder returned to action in front of the watching Sir Alex Ferguson against Arsenal reserves, who welcomed back Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen following seven months out with an Achilles tendon injury.

Fletcher’s comeback will be viewed as a major boost by Ferguson as the club prepare for a series of pivotal fixtures over the final month of the campaign.

While Fletcher, 27, is unlikely to start against Arsenal — with Vermaelen already ruled out of Sunday’s game — his return could see him emerge as a potential starter in the Champions League final should United, as expected, overcome Schalke in next Wednesday’s semi-final second leg to book an anticipated clash against Barcelona at Wembley on May 28.

Fletcher missed United’s defeat against Barcelona in the 2009 Champions League final in Rome through suspension, but the Edinburgh-born midfielder’s tenacity and ability to perform defensive duties in front of the back four are regarded as crucial to United’s hopes of avenging the Rome defeat.

Vermaelen’s return to action has come too late for the 25 year-old to affect Arsenal’s hopes of success this season, but the centre-half is expected to return to first-team duty before the end of the campaign having not figured since the 2-1 victory at Blackburn last August.

Meanwhile, United midfielder Michael Carrick has admitted he has finally regained his best form after struggling to secure a starting position at Old Trafford in the aftermath of the Champions League final defeat against Barcelona two years ago.

Carrick, who signed a three-year contract recently, has become an integral figure in recent weeks, despite speculation during the winter that he could be sold by the club.

“The first three years here went so well and then losing the final [in Rome] was a blow,” he said. “You play as it comes in big games and have to understand it’s not all going to be great. You can’t play well all of your career in every game, but you just keep going and believing in yourself and the form comes back. It has happened to a lot of players and it will happen to many more.

“The manager believes in everyone and trusts in everyone and I bring my strengths and weaknesses just like everyone else. It’s about believing in yourself and playing and this is the best place for me to play my football.”

United require seven points to claim the Premier League title and could secure a record 19th domestic championship against Chelsea at Old Trafford on May 8 if they defeat Arsenal at the Emirates this weekend. And despite claims that United have failed to hit the heights of previous seasons, Ferguson insists his current team have shown title-winning qualities.

“This team might not have the 'Ronaldo’ factor, but it doesn’t understand the word defeat,” he said. “It’s determined, gritty and very professional, and it’s produced some great moments.

“Some of the football we’ve seen from the players this season has been terrific, but it’s important to keep momentum going by winning games. That’s vital.

“Draws don’t come into it now, it’s all about wins. We’ve got a big few games coming up and we need to win them.”

Natalia Guicciardini Strozzi, a member of one of Florence's oldest noble families, said that searching for and exhuming the remains of Lisa Gherardini was "a sacrilegious act".

Gherardini was the wife of a rich Florentine silk merchant and is believed by many art historians to have been the model for Leonardo da Vinci's best known painting, which today hangs in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

A team of Italian researchers began the hunt for her skeleton beneath a convent in Florence, using ground-penetrating radar to search for evidence of old tombs.

They hope to find Gherardini's remains and to gather enough skull fragments to be able to reconstruct her face.

That would enable a comparison to be made with the Mona Lisa to determine once and for all whether Gherardini was the inspiration for the portrait – an objective that some scholars have said is far-fetched.

"My ancestor's remains should be left to rest in peace," said the princess, who is also an actress, winemaker and former ballerina.

"What difference would finding her remains make to the allure of Leonardo's painting? The attempt to find her bones seems to me an inappropriate and sacrilegious act."

The princess's family own an estate near San Gimignano, the Tuscan village known as the "medieval Manhattan" for the 72 stone towers built by competing families during the Middle Ages, of which 13 remain.

She is a descendant of two noble lines, the Strozzis and the Giucciardinis, and Niccolo Machiavelli worked as a secretary to one of her ancestors.

The Strozzis were enemies of the Medicis and the two dynasties jostled for power in Renaissance Florence.

Another ancestor, a noblewoman, took drawing lessons from Michelangelo. The princess's blood link to Lisa Gherardini goes back 15 generations.

The team of researchers will spend three days using the radar to analyse to a depth of 10ft the soil beneath the cloisters and chapels of the deconsecrated Convent of St Ursula, which is in a state of disrepair.

They plan to start excavating the site early next month, with the dig expected to take two weeks.

If they find the remains of a woman of about Gherardini's age – she was 63 when she died in 1542 – they plan to extract DNA from the bones and compare it with the DNA of her children, who are buried in a nearby church.

The team is led by Silvano Vinceti, a self-styled "Sherlock Holmes" of the art history world who claims to have detected secret codes in the eyes of the Mona Lisa and in the landscape which forms the backdrop to the portrait, although his theories have been dismissed by other scholars.

Haley Barbour drops out of presidency race before it even begins

Haley Barbour, the governor of Mississippi, has laid the foundations for a run at the White House, putting together a campaign team and even losing weight, has abandoned his plans after his wife opposed the move.

Mr Barbour, a self-confessed "fat redneck", was widely expected to run for the Republican nomination to challenge Barack Obama next year, assembling a team of advisers and establishing a powerful fund-raising network.

The 63-year-old appeared noticeably slimmer, after once saying that a shrinking waistline would be proof positive that his White House ambitions were serious.

Senior Republicans expected him to be a top tier contender, though they acknowledged that his background as a Washington lobbyist, his good old boy Southern persona and impolitic remarks about race presented problems.

On Monday night, however, Mr Barbour dashed expectations when he announced he would not be a candidate next year.

He did not have the sufficient drive, he suggested, needed to embrace a "10-year commitment to an all-consuming effort, to the virtual exclusion of all else".

The wording and mention of 10 years hinted at what party insiders believe was the real reason why he abandoned his presidential ambitions.

In a recent television interview, his wife Marsha made clear that she was adamantly opposed to Mr Barbour entering the White house fray.

"It horrifies me," she said, highlighting the "huge sacrifice" it would mean for her family.

"You would commit to 10 years, which would be two years of campaigning, then you run to win, so it would be four years. Then you would want to run again, so it's 10 years and it's the last part of our productive lives."

Back in 1996, just as Mr Barbour was preparing to step down as Republican National Committee chairman, effectively the party's head, Mrs Barbour said: "The last four years have been the hardest thing we've ever done.

"I haven't really been that much of a part of it. He's been so busy and so consumed. He hasn't been home for an anniversary in a long time, or a birthday."

She added: "The next 11 years will be my turn."

Mr Barbour's exit from the 2012 stakes came as Representative Ron Paul, the libertarian folk hero who drew a huge internet following in 2008 and raised massive amounts of money, threw his hat into the ring.

Few, however, regard the anti-war Mr Paul, 75, as having a realistic chance of winning the nomination. Party operatives view Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and Tim Pawlenty, all former governors, as the front runners in a race that has been slow to begin in earnest.

Public spending watchdog chiefs spend thousands on fine dining

Public spending watchdog chiefs spend thousands on fine dining

Executives at the public spending watchdog have spent thousands of pounds using taxpayer-funded credit cards at Michelin-starred restaurants, florists and a gym equipment supplier, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

Interim profits at Thorntons, the chocolate retailer, dropped 39pc.

Boxes of Thorntons chocolates were among the articles bought on government credit cards

Robert Winnett

By Robert Winnett, Deputy Political Editor 10:12PM BST 24 Apr 2011

Senior figures at the Audit Commission, which polices spending at local authorities, NHS trusts and other government bodies, spent almost £20,000 of public money over the past two years on luxury goods and services.

The body is thought to be the first government organisation to release details of spending on taxpayer-funded credit cards. Thousands of other civil servants also have the cards, which have been used for spending of about £1  billion, leading to warnings of a public funds scandal.

The credit card receipts disclose that Audit Commission executives enjoyed meals costing more than £600 at L’Escargot and Coq d’Argent in London. Hundreds of pounds were also spent at a brasserie owned by Raymond Blanc, the French chef. In total, £11,390 was spent on fine dining in two years.

Executives also made 30 purchases at florists, costing more than £1,300, and also bought goods from HMV and Thorntons, cinema tickets and doughnuts.

The details were released to Eric Ollerenshaw, a Conservative MP, and will be officially disclosed to the House of Commons this week.

Last night Mr Ollerenshaw said: “It is unbelievable. I spent years in local government and the Audit Commission was supposed to be the gold standard. There is now a question over whether this money should be repaid.”

Grant Shapps, the Local Government Minister, also condemned the expenditure.

“These revelations show a deep-rooted culture of waste in the Audit Commission,” he said. “The body was treating the government procurement card as its flexible friend, spending taxpayers’ cash as if it had just won the lottery.

“What is so disturbing is that their expenses read like a shopping list for some lavish party. It seems the Audit Commission was not applying the checks and balances on itself that it preached to councils.”

Another government insider said that another “MPs’ expenses-style scandal” could emerge if details of credit card expenditure across government were published. Senior mandarins are understood to be privately seeking to block such a release.

The government procurement cards are Visa cards issued by several banks for small office expenditure, including travel. Some Whitehall departments insist that the cards are used for all spending of less than £5,000, which is automatically paid off from public funds.

Last year a report into government efficiency by Sir Philip Green, the owner of the Topshop clothes chain, criticised the cards. It found that there were 140,000 taxpayer-funded procurement cards in circulation, while the total spent on them was about £1 billion a year, including £520 million in central government. Sir Philip concluded that spending on the cards “is not monitored”.

The Government announced last year that it would disband the Audit Commission in 2012. Ministers criticised it after it admitted spending hundreds of pounds on pot plants and meetings at a racecourse. Eric Pickles, the Communities Secretary, also blocked a new pay package for its chief executive.

Other taxpayer-funded credit card expenditure included more than £100 on chocolates, £200 at Next, the clothes shop, and £1,126 on gym equipment.

The Audit Commission refused to provide an exact breakdown of expenditure, saying it “does not receive enhanced transaction information from our card provider”. It is not known which executives had access to the card.

FA Youth Cup: Manchester United 4 Chelsea 0; agg 6-3: match report

FA Youth Cup: Manchester United 4 Chelsea 0; agg 6-3: match report

Read a full match report of the FA Youth Cup semi-final between Manchester United and Chelsea at Old Trafford on Wednesday April 20 2011.

By Daren Witcoop 10:00PM BST 20 Apr 2011

Comments

Although Manchester United failed to reach the FA Cup final, the next generation of Old Trafford hopefuls reached the FA Youth Cup final on Wednesday night with an emphatic drubbing of Chelsea.

In front of a crowd of 9,124 which included Bobby Charlton and United first-team players Chris Smalling, Gabriel Obertan and Patrice Evra, the home side secured a win which will have been especially painful for Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, who is determined that his side start producing youngsters capable of graduating to the first team.

United now face a two-legged final against Sheffield United. The directors’ box at Old Trafford was full of watching scouts, looking for the next young player they can poach if they fail to make the grade in the senior side.

The benchmark for success remains Manchester United’s 1992 winning squad that contained seven future internationals. From David Beckham to Ryan Giggs, the golden generation formed part of the dynasty Sir Alex Ferguson has built.

Yet the obstacles that stand in the way of a first-team place are becoming bigger with every year. From three years ago, the Chelsea FA Youth Cup side that lost the final to Manchester City, only Gael Kakuta, Miroslav Stoch, Jeffrey Bruma and Patrick Van Aanholt have broken through. All four have now gone out on loan.

Of Chelsea’s side on Wednesday night, only Josh McEachran hads tasted first-team experience this season. The other destined to join him is Ravel Morrison, although this Manchester United striker has a very different story to tell.

At the start of February, Morrison stood in the dock of Trafford youth court, after admitting two charges of intimidating a witness. But Morrison was given a reprieve as the judge decided on a 12-month referral order. Ferguson stood by him following his scrape with the law. On this evidence you could see just why.

Morrison hauled the home side level on aggregate when his volley was deflected in in the first half. William Keane headed Sean McGinty’s cross home three minutes later before putting the tie beyond doubt when he bundled the ball home in the 78th minute.

The young striker then picked himself up to convert a late penalty, saluting the crowd in the process.

MATCH DETAILS

Manchester United (4-4-2): Johnston; Keane, Fornasier, Thorpe, McGinty, Cole, Tunnicliffe, Pogba (Lingard 86), Van Velzen (Blackett 72); Morrison (Lyons 89), Keane,

Chelsea (4-4-1): Blackman; Kane, Jalas, Pappoe, Deen-Conteh; Ince (Nditi 46), Chalobah, Saville, Devyne (Prosenik 80), McEachran; Lalkovic.

London 2012 Olympics: Locog should be more open about Games tickets, the lack of transparency is troubling

London 2012 Olympics: Locog should be more open about Games tickets, the lack of transparency is troubling

I now know why I see all of the London 2012 Olympic Games ticket advertisements around town, counting down the days until the deadline for applications.

London 2012 Olympics: Locog should be more open about Games tickets, the lack of transparency is troubling

For when I applied on Wednesday I prevaricated before hitting the 'Buy Now' button. Like most sports fans I am finding that buying the Olympic tickets is a giant leap into the unknown.

Somehow against all logic, we all have to put our faith in the London organising committe to do the best by us - as consumers - not by themselves, a privately-run organisation which has to raise £500 million from these ticket sales.

No wonder there are many thousands of sports fans unsure about whether to commit to these tickets or not. For there is enormous uncertainty surrounding the process, both in ordering and paying for the tickets, that has affected the majority who see the Games as a great event to go to, but perhaps not a must-see.

The highly sought after events will of course, be inundated with orders, but it is that middle to lower band of events that might be suffering from buyer reluctance.

When I ordered my tickets I had a choice of price points. But there is no information about the seating plans of the different prices; nor any basic details about how many seats might be available in this ballot in each of the categories.

Is it not unreasonable to ask how many £20.12 tickets for the opening ceremony are in this ballot? Or how many £1,500 ones are available? Will we be horrified at how few are on offer?

For some sessions I can indicate on the application form my maximum and minimum price. So what happens if I choose a C category ticket for an athletics finals session but have a minimum as the D category and the maximum as the A? Is my D category minimum price considered first before my C tickets? Or does my most expensive ticket option allocated before any other category? In other words is the ballot cascading up or down?

The Locog ticketing gurus tell us to have faith that they will determine the best way once all of the ticket orders are received. So not only are we all chancing our luck in the ballot, we are pitting ourselves against other the weight of other consumers's choices as to which price point will be allocated first. This lack of transparency is troubling.

Still, fighting my inner voice to forget about it all, I pressed the 'buy' button for my 26 tickets, which came to a staggering amount, and I completed the order. I fully expect to get just four tickets (for the BMX preliminaries) as my other choices are at very popular sessions.

But my thinking is at odds with friends who are assuming they will get all of their tickets and they are being more conservative, particularly as monies will be taken out of debit accounts or added to credit cards within weeks.

Presumably I will know the extent of my ballot success in inverse proportion to my horror at my declining bank account come mid-May when Locog says it will start debiting successful orders.

Locog says there are six days to go to buy the tickets, I say they should be more open about what exactly it is that they are selling.

When the Fenway Sports Group made their move to buy Liverpool last year they went to Arsenal, Sunday’s opponents, to see how it works at a club that is seeking a marriage of success and sustainability.

When members of the parliamentary select committee inquiry into football governance wanted to see a Champions League club seeking to live within its means, they were taken round the Emirates and met Arsène Wenger and chief executive Ivan Gazidis.

Opposition fans can find Arsenal sanctimonious and an element of their own support is frustrated that pride in financial projections has not been matched in trophies in the past six years but there is no question, though, that on the eve of Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules coming into force, Arsenal have become European football’s model club.

While so many, including Liverpool, seek to emulate Arsenal’s example, what now for Arsenal themselves? From Monday Stan Kroenke, the American property billionaire who has agreed to buy the shares of Danny Fiszman and Lady Bracewell-Smith, has 28 days to send out his offer document to the remaining shareholders, detailing his takeover bid. That document will make clear he intends for the club to keep running along the same lines. But what is the destination?

At a meeting in February, Gazidis gave a detailed presentation of the club’s five-year plan to board members, including Kroenke. This plan, which met with unanimous approval, is the second phase, after the move to the Emirates from Highbury, of the club’s 21st century development.

So, what’s the plan? In commercial terms, Arsenal want to go global.

One of the factors that motivated Kroenke to buy into the club is the cross-border potential of football. American sports are as bad at travelling as football is good at it. With Arsenal, new markets have opened up to Kroenke that would be impossible to crack with the Denver Nuggets. Over the next five years this is the area in which Arsenal need to improve.

There certainly is scope for substantial improvement in commercial revenues. Clubs have three main revenue streams: broadcast (television rights), match day (tickets etc) and commercial (sponsorship, merchandise). Of these, broadcast is yoked to the Premier League’s television deal and Arsenal’s performance in Europe while match-day revenues, swollen by the corporate entertaining that goes on at the Emirates, is impressive.

Commercially there is a lot of catching up to do. Manchester United will be the first club to break the £100 million mark for commercial revenue alone while Arsenal made a reported £44 million in 2010. United are so far ahead because they have been capitalising on the strength of their brand overseas.

Arsenal have done research that shows their ‘brand awareness’ is not that far behind the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona. They have more than five million ‘followers’ on Facebook and 500,000 on Twitter. The problem is making money out of this global popularity.

Gazidis hired Tom Fox, previously with Nike, Gatorade, and the NBA, to be the club’s chief commercial officer in August 2009, which has been followed by a raft of executive appointments with a focus on marketing. This team is looking to set up partnerships with companies, in Europe, the Far East and the US, that fit the club’s profile. A new shirt sponsorship deal next season is expected to bring in an extra £15 million per year.

The club is being very careful not to make it seem they are forgetting about the supporter who attends the Emirates — home of the first £100 ticket remember — but the logic is that the more money that can be brought in from overseas, the less pressure there will be on the club to generate revenue from match day. Knowing football, that probably means at best a slowing down of ticket price rises in the medium term.

What does all this commercial expansion mean for Wenger? In the context of Kroenke’s takeover, he has made it clear that he will stay in control of the “technical side” of the business, but this kind of ring-fencing will become increasingly difficult. While the club is intent on maintaining their policy of investment in wages (Samir Nasri, Gaël Clichy and Johan Djourou are expected to sign new deals this summer) ahead of transfer fees, Wenger knows he will have to compromise in other areas. This summer, for example, he will take his side on a pre-season tour, of China and Malaysia, for the first time since he joined the club.

“The Far East tour is a compromise with the financial department,” Wenger said. “It’s the real world because we do not get any other income other than what we produce so we have to produce as much as we can. I compromise as long as the tours respect our preparation.

“Ideally I wouldn’t want to go but I go because we get sponsorship money that is higher than in Europe. We will go to Malaysia and China. We have less financial potential than the others so we cannot fall behind with commercial income.”

It was not quite clear what he meant by “financial potential” but it is safe to assume it is his old bugbear: what he calls the “financial doping” of Manchester City and Chelsea. Despite Kroenke’s wealth — Forbes estimate his net worth to be $1.8 billion (£1.1 billion) — he is unlikely to disrupt the current model with a sustained burst of spending and Arsenal, like Liverpool, are relying on Uefa making good on their commitment to enforce their financial fair play rules.

“We go to financial fair play next season,” Wenger said. “I want to sit here in September and see who respects the FFP rules. We will have a good test with Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, United and Liverpool. Aston Villa can inject but I don’t think Tottenham will. We will respect it because it starts in June.”

If clubs are forced to live within their means then the future looks very promising indeed for Arsenal. While United are still commercially way ahead, they have to service the debt saddled on the club by the Glazers. With Arsenal’s own debt, incurred by the stadium move, smaller and shrinking and commercial revenues rising, the Uefa constraints could serve to liberate the club.

Ultimately it all comes back to Wenger. As they have not won trophies in the last six years, the Arsenal brand has been most strongly identified with their style of play, which, of course, is an extension of Wenger’s football philosophy. The club have been successful without winning silverware, in the sense that they have kept qualifying for the Champions League and have cemented a sense of club identity.

Without Wenger that identity could be compromised and the very brand the club is trying to sell around the globe will be weakened.

“I am not a brand, I’m a servant,” Wenger insisted. On this he is wrong: Arsenal and Arsene have become fundamentally intermeshed. No wonder the board were so pleased to get Wenger to commit to a new contract last August which takes him through until 2014. And he could even stay beyond that.

“I don’t know,” he said of his long-term future. “I have three years to go. I am 61. Nothing lasts forever that is for sure. If it’s not me anymore there will be someone else who can do exactly the same, if not better. I don’t know if I will stay with the club after I finish as manager. Right now I feel active and want to be on the football pitch.

“Once I cannot do it anymore I will try to be useful somewhere else, preferably at this club but if this club doesn’t need me than somewhere else.”

Gabriel Agbonlahor scored a dramatic stoppage time winner as Aston Villa reached the traditional safety target of 40 points, while putting West Ham United deep in danger.

West Ham scored after only two minutes through Robbie Keane, but once Darren Bent equalised in the first-half, Villa were the better side and missed a raft of chances before substitute Agbonlahor headed home from close range in the 91st minute.

West Ham had declared this game a celebration of "The Best of British" but it was an Irishman who got them off to a flying start when Robbie Keane scored after only two minutes. Villa's defence failed to clear a corner twice, and when Thomas Hitzlsperger headed the ball back in, Keane received it in an onside position with his back to goal, swivelled, and hit his shot past Brad Friedel from close range.

That gave the Hammers a confidence boost, and they looked like scoring a second. Luke Young had to make a diving challenge to prevent Carlton Cole scoring after Keane set him in on goal, and the England striker was then denied only when Friedel went charging out of his area to clear.

Cole was also denied a goalscoring chance when Richard Dunne barged him over just inside the penalty area, but referee Mark Halsey waved away West Ham's claims for a foul.

Cole was thriving on the service he was getting, and had another low shot turned round the post by Friedel in the 21st minute.

But then Villa started to get back into the game. Ashley Young's long shot was held by Robert Green at the second attempt, and Darren Bent was unlucky to have an effort ruled out when he headed home Stewart Downing's cross in the 24th minute, but was penalised harshly for a push on Lars Jacobsen.

But Bent was not to be denied too long. In the 36th minute, West Ham were architects of their own misfortune as Mark Noble dithered on the ball in his own area and was tackled by Emile Heskey. Ashley Young fed the loose ball to his namesake Luke, whose curling cross was ideal for Bent to steer past Green with a well-placed header.

Villa really took the game to West Ham after the break, with Bent and then Kyle Walker forcing good saves from Green. The home side were penned inside their own penalty area for long spellls, and Cole had to clear a Richard Dunne header off the line. Ashley Young had a vicious, swerving free-kick tipped around the post, and another fierce Bent shot was deflected narrowly wide. West Ham were struggling to get back into the game, and were not helped when Gary O'Neil was taken off on a stretcher with what looked like an ankle injury.

Still Villa pressed, and Ashley Young shot high and wide from a good position. Bent should have scored another goal after a great run and cutback from Walker, but fluffed his shot from close range.

Ashley Young then curled a shot just wide of Green's far post, before Bent headed wide and Nigel Reo-Coker had a long shot saved. The Hammers were reduced to attacking on the break, but Hitzlesperger hit one shot well wide and Cole hooked another over the bar.

But then came the killer blow, as Ashley Young curled in a cross from the right and Agbonlahor, who had only been on for 14 minutes, headed past Green from close range to send the Villa fans into raptures.

West Ham's supporters, meanhile, looked concerned - as well they might be with games at Chelsea and Manchester City to come.

The Scot, who attended many of the funerals after the disaster in his role as manager, will be joined at Anfield at 2.45pm on Friday by his players, staff, thousands of supporters and the relatives of those who died for a service commemorating the 22nd anniversary of their deaths.

The Liverpool manager is hopeful that the access enjoyed by the independent panel — chaired by Rt Rev James Jones, the Bishop of Liverpool — will finally bring the justice the Hillsborough Families Support Group and the Hillsborough Justice Campaign have wanted for so long.

The panel have been granted access to the full archive of South Yorkshire Police, whose negligence was blamed by the Taylor Report as the primary cause of the disaster, as well as thousands of previously unpublished papers from more than 60 agencies, including Sheffield Wednesday.

Rt Rev Jones insists he and the panel are committed to unearthing “the full truth” of what led to the tragedy on the Leppings Lane terraces.

“I think it is getting closer to some positive news for them, but it has taken a long time to get to this point as well,” Dalglish said.

“Two years ago Andy Burnham [then Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport] came up to the service and promised that he would do the best he could to get access to some papers that were not due to be released for another three or four years and he has done that.

“They have got access now to some papers that they’ve never had before and have now got to file through them and that’s why I’m saying it’s getting a bit more positive for the families.

“I don’t think what happened there will ever be removed from anybody and neither should it. I don’t think anybody should ever forget it. Everybody knows what it means to the football club and everybody knows how difficult it is for the people who lost someone there. The sooner they get the justice for themselves, the happier they will be and we all will be for them.”

Rt Rev Jones has confirmed that the documents already seen by the panel are new and revelatory, but is adamant that he and his colleagues will abide by a promise made to the families of those who died not to release selective detail until the final report is written.

Last-minute tax tips from a pro

Jill Schlesinger of CBS MoneyWatch, who writes the blog Jill on Money, joined Shine members on Twitter recently to talk about taxes. Schlesinger, a Certified Financial Planner ™, also hosts a nationally syndicated call-in/talk radio show, "Jill on Money," that helps listeners take control of their financial lives.

Whether you have yet to pull together all of your receipts and financial statements from the past year to do your taxes yourself, or you have neatly delivered all of your financial documents to an accountant, you probably have some last-minute questions to ask. Taxes are due April 18! Here's what we learned during our Shine Tax Twitter Chat:

Jill Schlesinger: Jill on Money/CBSMoneyWatch.com

Jill Schlesinger: Jill on Money/CBSMoneyWatch.com

Q: What if you work two jobs, but only received one W-2 form?
A: Ask. If there isn't one, include the income on your taxes anyway.

Q: Do teenagers who earn very little working a temporary summer job still need to file taxes?
A: That's tricky. In some cases, yes. In most cases, the simple 1040EZ form is all they need.

Q: Do you still have to file your taxes jointly if you divorced that year?
A: Usually, you do.

Q: There are so many deductions possible! What are the ones I should really look out for?
A: Here are 16 don't miss-deductions you should know about.

Q: My second job doesn't withhold taxes. Should I increase withholding on my primary job, or just pay the extra when I file?
A: I prefer to increase withholding.

Q: I gave money to charity this year. Do I need to file any special forms?
A: Don't forget to file Form 8283 for donations over $500! You don't need a form if you donate money or goods worth less than $500.

Q: How can you find out what to write off for taxes as business-related expenses?
A: My favorite, non-reimbursed deductions since switching careers from investment advice to TV are clothes, hair cuts and make-up! If I buy an outfit for TV, I keep the receipts and make sure to prove that I wore it on air. (Here's more information about how to understand non-reimbursed business expenses.)

Q: I'm considering a job for which I'd have to work remotely. Will I be able to deduct my internet bills?
A: Only the portion that's attributable to working from home.

Q: What happens if you submitted your taxes and realize you forgot to include a form?
A: File an amendment and resubmit your taxes.

Q: Is health insurance for the self-employed deductible?
A:Yes, but can't exceed the net profit of your business.

Q: Any tips for freelancers?
A: Freelancers, beware: The IRS loves to come after you for business expenses. The key is to have documentation!

Q: I've heard that home offices are another red flag for the IRS. Is this true?
A: Your home office must be used “exclusively and regularly” as a principle place of business, and must be a separate space within your home. Working from your home office on Fridays doesn't cut it. A home office can be an audit red flag, but if you have the documents to back it up, then claim it!

Q: Is it better to do your taxes yourself, or hire a tax preparer?
A: Doing it yourself saves money, but pros can often find deductions and credits you may have overlooked! Either way is fine (I'm too lazy to do it myself). Doing your own taxes shouldn't trigger an audit, but be careful with things like first-time home buyer's credit and business losses.

Q: What's a good way to get organized for next year's taxes?
A: Try an accordion file, where each section is a different part of your return. Use last year's return as guide! (If you need a copy of a previous year's tax return, you can order a transcript from the IRS.)

Don't forget, thanks to a holiday in Washington, D.C., you have until April 18, 2011 to file your 2010 taxes. Still crunching those numbers? There's tons of tax information right here on Shine:

London 2012 Paralympics: Richard Whitehead challenges Paralympic Committee over marathon inclusion

London 2012 Paralympics: Richard Whitehead challenges Paralympic Committee over marathon inclusion

Richard Whitehead, a British double leg amputee and world champion sprinter, has challenged the International Paralympic Committee to open the marathon event at the London 2012 Games to leg amputees.

Lower limb amputees are not included in the current criteria for the IPC Games marathon, which include blind, wheelchair and upper limb amputee classifications. Whitehead is the double amputee world marathon record holder.

In an open letter to Xavier Gonzalez, chief executive of the International Paralympic Committee, Whitehead wrote to express "despair in the matter of my qualification for the 2012 Paralympic marathon".

Whitehead said: "As a double leg amputee I am a T42 and I have been training for the past 3 years in order to qualify for the T46 (upper limb amputees) marathon.

"As the current World Record holder in my class for the full and half marathons, I am staggered that the opportunity to inspire leg amputees is looking increasingly unlikely due to the inflexibility of the IPC.”

“While I fully understand that logistically the IPC cannot run a separate event for every discipline, the simple fact that a race already exists, and I am being denied entry for no other reason than it has not happened before, is sickening.”

Whitehead claims he is being denied the chance to inspire others. “My twin goals are to be able to compete in the race and inspire others by demonstrating that being a double leg amputee is no reason to be held back.

"The 2012 Paralympic stage is key to spreading this message to the tens of thousands of leg amputees around the world as I would hope that watching me run in London will inspire and motivate many of them to do the same in the future.”

The IPC’s mission statement would appear to support Whitehead’s plea.

It reads: "The IPC is committed to enabling Paralympic athletes to achieve sporting excellence and to developing sport opportunities for all persons with a disability from the beginner to elite level. In addition, the IPC aims to promote the Paralympic values, which include courage, determination, inspiration and equality.”

Whitehead said: “This is clearly a gilt-edged opportunity for the IPC to fulfil its mission statement to the letter and spread the gospel around the globe.”

A spokesman for the IPC told the Telegraph: “We sympathise with Richard’s position but we have same situation as we did when the Court of Arbitration in Sport ruled on it in January.

"There is no T42 marathon and we can’t allow him to compete in the T46 marathon against arm amputee marathon runners. CAS has already ruled that it would not be right for an arm amputee to race in athletics against a leg amputee.”

Time to lean 365 Days (Year 5) #159 04/08

Did you know these things can grow up to 100 feet and live for a century. They can produce about 75 coconuts per year. They have been around for about 55 million years and can be found throughout the world.
The tree known as Cocos nucifera, or the coconut palm. Nice to meet ya.

The Stepped Pond

The Stepped Pond

Blogged @ Like The Ocean.

This square stepped shringi thirtha pond is located in one of the small, not so very famous temples, near Nandhi hills, Bangalore. It was a hot afternoon, still sitting in the shade under the mandap, along this pond was so pleasant and breezy (though the steps were scorching hot). The 10mm came in handy to capture the complete pond in this perspective. This place - Bhoganandishwara Temple - also boasts shrines with fine sikharas built out of stone. Check this out for one of the most ornate temple walls that can be found in the south Indian temples. Do make it a point to visit this place if you already have (or not) Nandhi Hills in the itinerary.
