Thunder even series with Spurs

OKLAHOMA CITY — When Lil Wayne turned down Kevin Durant’s invitation to watch the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals, he missed quite a show by the three-time scoring champion.

Durant scored 18 of his 36 points in a scintillating final 7 minutes, Serge Ibaka added a career-high 26 points and the Thunder evened the series at two games apiece by beating the Spurs 109-103 last night.

After seeing his team’s 15-point lead dwindle to four, Durant took over midway through the fourth quarter by scoring all 16 of the Thunder’s points during a span of just over five minutes to keep the Spurs at bay.

“I didn’t tell myself that I need to go score because what we were doing was working,” Durant said.

“I just wanted to stick with what we were doing, but it started to open up for me and I could see some lanes that gave me some opportunities to make some shots.”

With All-Star teammate Russell Westbrook limited to seven points, Durant did most of the damage late to send the series back to San Antonio all square for Game 5 tomorrow night.

Durant, who finished behind only LeBron James in MVP voting, hit three straight jumpers, the last one coming after he bumped into Tony Parker in the lane to draw a foul and set up a three-point play. Then he attacked the rim for his next three baskets, getting to the line again when he was fouled on a layup off of James Harden’s alley-oop.

Durant hit another jumper after coming off a Westbrook screen for the last basket in his personal run — and the Spurs were still within striking distance. Rookie Kawhi Leonard bracketed a pair of 3-pointers around that Durant jumper, and the Spurs were only down 102-96 with 1:24 left, but they could get no closer.

“When a player that talented gets hot, it’s really hard to contain,” San Antonio’s Manu Ginobili said.

Bosh to miss Heat’s Game 4

Heat forward Chris Bosh, who is recovering from an abdominal strain, will not play in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Celtics tonight.

Fordham Prep rips Xaverian

When the CHSAA Class AA baseball championship round was set, Steve Fondu worked out in his head how No. 4 Fordham Prep could face top-seeded Xaverian. The Furman-bound right-hander was beating the Clippers last Saturday in the seeding round before he was pulled from the start after six innings and his bullpen lost the lead.

“We knew we had that first game,” he said. “It was a tough loss, we wanted to get revenge.”

Fondu made the most of the rematch, going the distance in an impressive, come-from-behind 9-3 victory in the championship round winner’s bracket at St. John’s yesterday. He allowed five hits, walked two, struck out eight and retired the final eight batters he faced and nine of the last 10.

“Once he gets in a groove like that, he’s hard to hit,” Fordham Prep coach Pat Deane said.

With the win, Fordham Prep (15-7) moves on to face No. 6 Iona Prep, a 3-2, nine-inning winner over No. 2 St. Raymond’s yesterday, on Sunday with the winner advancing to the championship game.

“Who wouldn’t want that to get to the ‘chip,’ ” Fordham shortstop Andrew Velazquez said, referring to Iona Prep, the Rams’ rival.

Fondu was shaky early on, tagged for three runs in the first two frames. But Fordham’s potent lineup came roaring back against Xaverian (19-2) pitchers John Pena and Frank Kaplan.

The Virginia-Tech bound Velazquez led the charge with three hits, three stolen bases, four runs scored and an RBI. Catcher Zach Leone and first baseman Jack Sexton added two-run singles, part of the Rams’ explosive 12-hit barrage.

“When we play like we did today, I don’t think anybody can beat us,” Fondu said. “We hit the ball, played great defense. I don’t think we made an error.”

Yankees bullpen thriving despite Rivera, Robertson injuries

Mariano Rivera checked out with a serious knee injury on May 5. David Robertson hasn't pitched since May 11 due to a rib cage problem.

Yet, without the premier closer in the baseball and the best eighth-inning arm the Yankees' bullpen hasn't gone to seed.

Going into tonight's game against the Tigers in Detroit, Yankee relievers were ranked third with a 2.69 ERA. Only the Orioles (2.32) and Reds (2.39) were better than the Yankees.

"We have resilient guys down there who compete,'' GM Brian Cashman said. "And Joe (Girardi) is doing a good job of mixing and matching.''

Since Rivera went down the Yankees have converted seven of eight saves and Rafael Soriano is a perfect 6-for-6.

Right-hander Cory Wade and lefty Boone Logan have pitched well.

And that must continue because Cashman said yesterday Robertson is at least two weeks away from returning.

"He will need a number of bullpen sessions and then batting practices before he pitches in a minor league rehab assignment,'' Cashman said.

*

A Yankees lineup that needs help could be getting it sooner than Robertson returns.

According to Cashman, Brett Gardner (strained right elbow) is getting close to taking batting practice.

"He will go out on a rehab (assignment) a week after that,'' Cashman said of the speedy left fielder who hasn't played since April 17.

Yankees' Martin complains about umpire after win

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Russell Martin said plate umpire Laz Diaz punished him last night for arguing balls and strikes early in the game.

Martin likes to keep his arm loose by throwing balls to the pitcher after a ball goes out of play. But that wasn’t the case last night with Diaz.

BOX SCORE

“He told me I had to earn the privilege,’’ a confused Martin said after the Yankees’ 6-5 win over the Angels. “That was strange and mystifying. He was punishing me.’’

Even when Martin got hit by a ball under the chin and needed a minute to collect himself, he said Diaz wouldn’t let him throw the ball to Rafael Soriano.

“I feel like he was trying to get me [thrown out], but it wasn’t going to happen,’’ Martin said.

***

As with all pitchers, the Yankees have concerns about Andy Pettitte. He will be 40 in two weeks. He sat out all of last year. And in 2010 he battled groin and back problems.

And while Pettitte needs to get his fastball velocity consistently to 89-90 mph to create separation from his other pitches, the veteran lefty isn’t among the Yankees’ rotation concerns even if he is far from satisfied with what has unfolded in four starts.

“I have to get better,’’ Pettitte said after a Tuesday’s 5-1 loss to the Angels. “That’s all there is to it.’’

While the Yankees live in a “now’’ universe where every pitch is a referendum on whether the arm is good enough or not, scouts say Pettitte can’t be judged accurately until much later.

“It might take until the end of August to see what the real deal is,’’ a talent evaluator who watched Pettitte give up five runs and nine hits in seven-plus innings. “It’s the end of spring training or early April for him.’’

Considering Phil Hughes is 4-5 with a 5.64 ERA and has given up 63 hits in 52 ²/ innings, he isn’t showing a top-of-the-rotation act the Yankees hoped to have seen by now.

Hiroki Kuroda is 4-6 with a respectable 3.96 ERA but has been wildly inconsistent and has allowed 85 baserunners (21 walks; one hit batter and 63 hits) in 61 ¹/ innings. And he is 37.

Ivan Nova, who picked up his sixth win last night, suffers from the same problem Hughes and Kuroda do: too many baserunners.

So, based on the numbers of others and the fact that he is 2-2 with a 3.49 ERA and has given up less hits (27) than innings pitched (28 ¹/), you could make the assumption that Pettitte has vaulted past Kuroda as the No. 2 starter behind CC Sabathia.

Nevertheless, be careful.

“What he is right now is a fifth starter because it’s early for him and he didn’t compete last year,’’ the scout said. “Everyone wants to put him ahead of Nova and the other guys. He might be later because his is so smart and competes, but not yet. You have to see him late to see if he did get the magic back.’’

***

Brett Gardner may never be an All-Star, and the Yankees value his talent more than most organizations. But until the speedy left fielder returns the DL, the Yankees lineup won’t be complete.

Though Gardner is making some progress in Tampa coming back from a strained right elbow, there is no timetable for him to begin a second minor league rehab assignment.

Raul Ibanez has done a solid job helping to replace Gardner in left but the soon-to-be 40-year-old lefty swinger has probably played a bit more in the outfield than manager Joe Girardi anticipated in spring training.

Lately, Ibanez has slowed and entered last night’s action in a 5-for-24 (.208) slide across six games and had driven in one run.

Since Gardner went down on April 17, Ibanez, 40 Saturday, has started 19 games in left and five in right.

“In my mind I figured he would play the outfield one or two times a week, maybe three times in two weeks to give guys breaks,’’ Girardi said of his mindset in spring training.

Signed to be the DH against right-handed pitching, Ibanez was hitting .261 with nine homers and 28 RBIs.

Since Gardner, who is working out in Tampa, hasn’t been given a date when he will begin a second minor league rehab assignment.

***

Robinson Cano participated in hitting coach Kevin Long’s pull drill Wednesday afternoon. With a screen cutting the plate in half, the hitter can’t do anything else but pull Long’s flips from about 20 feet away.

The drill is popular with other Yankees, but Cano is by far the most active participant. It paid off with Cano hitting a two-run homer.

***

The Yankees started Wednesday night's game against Angels right-hander Ervin Santana 0-11 in games when they didn’t homer.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, they were the only team in the majors who hadn’t won a game in which they didn’t homer.

***

David Robertson continues a throwing program in Tampa but hasn’t been assigned a date when he will start a rehab assignment. Robertson has been out since May 11 with a left rib cage injury.

Bankers hired by BlackBerry maker

Research in Motion is lost in transition.

The BlackBerry maker said yesterday it hired investment banks JPMorgan and RBC to review its “options,” which most investors took to mean a potential sale, and warned of another quarterly loss.

The announcement also cast serious doubt on the company’s yet-to-be released next-generation smartphones.

Shares of RIM, which rose 2 percent to close at $11.23 in regular trading, were halted in after hours. The shares tumbled as much as 12 percent when trading resumed, marking the first time the stock has dipped below $10 in nearly a decade.

“RIM is going through a significant transformation as we move towards the BlackBerry 10 launch,” the company said in a statement. “And our financial performance will continue to be challenging for the next few quarters.”

Rivals Apple and Google are selling millions of smartphones, while RIM can’t move its products. There’s more than $1 billion in BlackBerry phones and tablets sitting unsold, the company said, likely leading to another quarterly write-off.

“It’s such a dying platform,” said analyst Colin Gillis. “It’s just a downward slide. There’s not even a product out to transition to.”

It’s been a series of disappointing product launches at RIM, including the failed BlackBerry 7 phones and PlayBook tablets. The BlackBerry 10 phones, which are based on the same QNX software that powers the company’s PlayBooks, aren’t expected until the holiday season.

In the meantime, RBC and JPMorgan bankers will look for any value to wring out of the company. RIM’s most valuable asset at this point is its patents, analysts said. One analyst told Reuters yesterday that at $10 a share, RIM’s $6 billion market cap is about the value of its patent portfolio.

Barclays to host Russians

The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming! And they’re bringing their hockey sticks.

Teams from Russia’s KHL are expected to play the first regular-season hockey games at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center — trumping the Islanders, who are considering a future move to the arena and will be playing an exhibition game there.

KHL President Alexander Medvedev told Russia’s Sovetsky Sport yesterday high-profile teams from his league — perhaps KHL champ Dynamo Moscow — would be playing two regular-season games at Barclays Center in January.

Barclays Center officials wouldn’t confirm the deal but said serious talks are ongoing.

However, sources said the arrangement makes sense considering the arena will be home to the Brooklyn Nets — which are owned by Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov — and arena officials have said they want to tap into Brooklyn’s large Russian population.

Also, with a potential NHL lockout looming next season, the KHL could be the only hockey game in town.

The Islanders are playing the Devils Oct. 2 at Barclays in an exhibition game.

Although Barclays Center holds 18,200 for basketball, it can only hold 14,500 for hockey. And because of sight restrictions, a U-shaped seating configuration will be implemented during hockey contests with sections behind one of the two goals closed off. The Islanders — whose lease with Nassau Coliseum ends in 2015 — only averaged 13,191 fans for their home games this season.
